Millions of Americans suffer from painful heartburn and “Bay Staters” are no exception. Whether it’s an over indulgence of lobster rolls or one to many fluffernutters, many Massachusetts residents have placed their trust in drugs, such as Zantac, for relief. When later, through FDA recalls, that trust has been shown to have been violated, the results can lead to serious health consequences. It may be hard to know where to turn. At Jason Stone Injury Lawyers, we believe that drug manufacturers, such as those producing Zantac, should be held accountable for injuries caused by their negligence. Jason Stone Injury Lawyers is dedicated to helping citizens of Massachusetts that have been injured from the drug Zantac. Call our attorneys at 800-577-5188 to discuss what happened. You do not have to fight alone.
Zantac Linked To Cancer
Zantac was first sold in 1983 as an acid blocker and was approved by the FDA for short-term use. Questions about the safety of Zantac and it’s generic equivalent, ranitidine, were raised by scientists in Italy that same year. Two Italian studies uncovered a potential link between Zantac and a carcinogenic molecule contaminant, called nitrosodimethylamine, or NDMA. NDMA has been classified by the EPA as a B2 probable human carcinogen-a substance that can cause cancer.
In September of 2019 the FDA issued a voluntary recall of Zantac and other products containing ranitidine, citing issues with the cancer causing NDMA contaminant. Then in April of 2020, the FDA requested that “manufacturers withdraw all prescription and over-the-counter ranitidine drugs from the market immediately.”
Symptoms Linked To NDMA Exposure Due to Zantac
The on-going use of Zantac and the resultant NDMA exposure has been linked to various forms of cancer, which develop over time. Before cancer is diagnosed, however, other concerning symptoms may develop, such as dizziness, fever, headaches, vomiting, abdominal cramping, nausea, enlarged liver, jaundice, and damage to lungs, kidneys and liver. If you or a loved one have taken Zantac and are experiencing any of these symptoms, please talk to your doctor. Early medical treatment is critical to your recovery. If you suspect that your symptoms are caused by Zantac use, contact Jason Stone Injury Lawyers to speak with an attorney experienced in litigating drug injury cases.
Certain Cancers Linked To Zantac Contamination
The cancer-causing contaminant discovered in the drug Zantac, NDMA, is linked to certain types of cancer. NDMA is created by Zantac once it is ingested. The presence of sodium nitrites commonly found in the human stomach, enables the ingredients in Zantac to create the dangerous chemical NDMA. When exposed to sodium nitrates, Zantac produced 304,500 nanograms of NDMA per pill, a highly dangerous amount considering the FDA has determined that 96 nanograms of NDMA is the maximum intake amount per day.
Zantac use has been linked to multiple forms of cancer, including but not limited to:
- Liver Cancer
- Gastric (stomach) Cancer
- Colorectal Cancer
- Bladder Cancer
- Breast Cancer
- Intestinal Cancer
- Esophageal Cancer
- Kidney Cancer
- Liver Cancer
- Prostate Cancer
- Lung Cancer
- Pancreatic Cancer
- And more

Drug companies have an obligation to ensure the medications they manufacture and sell are safe and effective. Continued research be on-going, far past FDA approval in order to make sure products remain safe over the long term. If a product is discovered to be unsafe in any way, or later proves to increase cancer risk, drug companies are obligated to report the danger to the FDA in a timely manner. If you suspect the medication Zantac may be responsible for you or a loved one’s cancer. Please contact an attorney. You deserve fair compensation and Jason Stone Injury Lawyers are committed to making sure you receive it.
Filing a Zantac Personal Injury Claim
If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with cancer believed to be caused by the drug Zantac, it can be hard to know where to start. Drug companies have seemingly unlimited resources at their disposal to intimidate, delay and maneuver, leaving victims feeling overwhelmed and helpless. It is critical to have a law firm by your side to walk you through the process from beginning to end.
Once it is determined that you have a legitimate claim, your lawyer will set up your case, informing the defendant responsible for your injury or illness that you intend to seek compensation. This may also include informing any insurance companies involved.
Your personal injury attorney will also gather information and evidence, including medical bills, treatment records, diagnoses, in short, anything that can be used as evidence in your case. Your lawyer may communicate with your doctors and arrange for second opinions if necessary, as well as arrange for specialists. It is important that you keep your attorney informed of any new developments or changing information that may impact your case. Clear client and attorney communication is key to a successful settlement.
Negotiating a settlement is where having an attorney really pays off. Most victims of drug company negligence simply don’t have the expertise necessary to go toe to toe with “Big Pharma” and their high-powered lawyers. Your attorney will negotiate on your behalf and will not be intimidated by bully tactics.
If negotiations fail and a settlement is not reached, then it’s time to file a lawsuit and go to court. When hiring an attorney, make sure they have the experience necessary to successfully take a case to trial and see it through. Trials can be incredibly stressful and it is critical that you trust your attorney to represent you in all matters pertaining to your case.
