The Pfizer made antibiotic Zithromax can have harmful side effects for children, including risk of Stevens Johnson Syndrome. At least one Zithromax lawsuit has been filed that claims the manufacturer did not properly warn consumers about dangerous side effects associated with the antibiotic.
Zithromax, also known generically as azithromycin, is an antibiotic used to treat infections caused by bacteria. In children, it is typically used to treat middle ear infections, pneumonia, and tonsillitis.
In 2006, a report found by the National Center for Biotechnology Information suggested a link between Zithromax and SJS in at least two cases. In 2012, reports indicate a lawsuit was filed again Pfizer after a child developed SJS immediately after taking azithromycin. SJS is a serious, life-threatening allergic reaction to medication, and is also known in a more severe form as toxicepidermal necrolysis (TEN). The allergic reaction can develop in a patient of any age and at any time, even if a medication that triggered SJS was previously tolerated. A patient that suffers from SJS typically gets severe skin blistering or mucous membrane inflation. Many that develop SJS or TEN suffer symptoms similar to burn victims, and are often treated in a hospital’s burn unit.
Patients that do survive this condition, tend to have permanent injuries that include scarring, difficultly eating, and vision problems. It can take months of medical treatment to recover from SJS.
Lawsuits have been filed against makers of medications linked to the development of SJS, that claim they either knew or should have known about risks associated with the drugs and neglected to warn the medical community or patients about that risk.
